WONDER WOMEN MOVIE REVIEW

 WONDER WOMEN MOVIE REVIEW

STORY: The film narrates the story of six pregnant women from different backgrounds who are on their way to becoming mothers but are plagued by misconceptions, confusion, and questions about pregnancy and childbirth. In their quest to know it all, they discover their identities and answers to their deep-seated problems.

REVIEW: Writer-director Anjali Menon, who primarily works in Malayalam cinema, presents a novel idea of depicting the various emotions that a woman goes through while on her way to the most precious stage of her life, “Motherhood”. The narrative subtly shows that pregnancy and parenthood are a journey in which both mothers and their male counterparts play a significant role. Furthermore, this 80-minute film beautifully captures the concept of being there for one another and empowering one another during difficult times. The film's USP is its effortless narration, which connects well with the audience.

Wonder Women introduces us to Nandita (Nadhiya Moidu), who runs Sumana, a prenatal class that educates and enlightens expectant mothers about motherhood. Then we meet six pregnant women— Jaya (Amruta Subhash) who conceives through treatment after three miscarriages; Veni (Padmapriya), who comes from a traditional family and expects more support from her partner; Mini (Parvathy Thiruvothu), a single mother; Nora (Nitya Menen), who wants to pursue her dreams but prioritises motherhood over them; Saya (Sayanora Philip), who is quite the rebel is pregnant with her live-in partner's child; and Gracy (Archana Padmini), who is pregnant with a second child, is concerned about having enough money to cover the expenses. They all end up in Nandita's care and their lives become intertwined in more ways than they can imagine. Together, they not only learn new things about motherhood but also make new friends and find answers to their deep-rooted problems. In interesting ways, viewers learn about each character's personal life as well as their confusion about motherhood.

All the characters are well-etched, and viewers admire them all. The screenplay uses pauses and some heartfelt moments to express how these characters are feeling. The film's heart is Nadiya Moidu, Nithya Menen, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Padmapriya, Sayanora Phillip, Archana Padmini, and Amruta Subhash. The best part is that each of these women complements the others rather than eclipsing one another.

Anjali Menon excels at both writing and directing departments. The climax of Wonder Women will undoubtedly leave you with warm feelings long after it has concluded. Overall, this simple ode to the challenging experience of motherhood definitely deserves a watch.
